Intel continues its ‘journey’ into mobile at Computex 2014

Scores of hardware wins, a 14nm fanless 2-in-1 chip and a live SoFIA voice call demo define Intel’s keynote at this year’s Computex.

Intel can count 12 tablet hardware wins, and 130 more this year, from a long list of OEMs and ODMs its President, Renee James, said on stage at Computex in Taipei.

This early announcement during Intel’s keynote defined the theme for the majority of the rest of the keynote: mobile. Intel’s big announcement for the keynote was not just claims of a long list of design wins for its mobile chips, but rather a new mobile chip in the Core family. The Core M processor, available later this year, is built on the 14nm process node, and is fanless.

Asus’ Jonney Shih said on stage that his company’s new Transformer Book T300 Chi tablet-notebook hybrid is powered by Intel’s new chip.

James also address Intel’s efforts in the smartphone side of the mobile world. Renee said that Intel’s 6-capable Intel XMM 7260 LTE-Advanced baseband is now shipping to customers. Shih demonstrated the baseband in action by streaming a trailer of the Taiwanese film Kano on stage.

The other part of Intel’s smartphone efforts is Project SoFIA. At IDF Shenzhen Intel CEO Brian Krzanich demonstrated the first Skype call using a SoFIA-powered reference design phone, and on stage at Computex James made another demonstration of the SoC by making a live phone call with a SoFIA powered phone.

James said Intel will also bring a quad-core SoFIA LTE part, made in collaboration with Rockchip, to market in the first half of 2015.

In the second half of the keynote Intel shifted to the desktop and officially launched Devil’s Canyon. Details on Devil’s Canyon launch can be read here.
