Crytek has unveiled the next chapter in the Homefront series.
The rumors were right on the money: Crytek and Deep Silver today announce*a sequel to the alternate reality war shooter Homefront, which is currently slated for a 2015 release for PS4, Xbox One and PC.
The game is entitled Homefront: The Revolution , and makes full use of the franchises’*emphasis on a fractured dystopia where a band of brave revolutionaries*battle an oppressive regime, and even has some nice extras like four-player co-op and a dynamic open-world focus.
The Korean Army rules supreme over the United States, fashioning a bleak and desolate dystopia with strong fascist overtones.
The story has many of the same themes as the original: the United States has been overrun and conquered by the People’s Army of Korea, bringing a tyrannical reign that obliterates freedom altogether. Philadelphia has been transformed into a totalitarian state, constantly monitored and controlled by brute force.
In an effort to thwart their persecutors, players must make use of devious guerrilla warfare tactics*like*cutthroat ambushes, explosive demolition operations, and stealthy infiltration. Using an armament of improvised*weaponry, gamers can join their friends in live co-op sessions to take part in frenetic firefights and even conscript fellow citizens from open-world environments to build the resistance movement.
Resistance fighters use everything in their employ as a weapon, including old-fashioned molotov cocktails.
Homefront: The Revolution, Crytek and Deep Silver join forces for the first time to create an authentic sequel-based experience while making something wholly unique.
The game marks the first release in the franchise since Crytek purchased the IP from THQ a while ago, and based from the screenshots, info and footage we’d say its in good hands.
The prospect of drop-in/drop-out online co-op is a welcome feature, offering huge potential which brings to mind the Dead Island series. It also appears that the sequel won’t be “your average linear shooter”, and players will be able to affect and shape the world around them with their actions by fortifying the resistance movement.
The resistance is a webwork of guerrilla soldiers who are laying their lives on the line for freedom.
According to Crytek Game Director Hasit Zala, Homefront: The Revolution will*inspire players to fight for their freedom and bring down the despotic regime:
“Homefront: The Revolution stands out from the crowd by immersing players in a world where they’ll feel emotionally compelled to fight for their freedom.*We’re very excited to work with Deep Silver and deliver an experience that underlines Crytek’s commitment to quality whilst tapping into the huge potential we saw when we first acquired the Homefront IP.”
After a series of catastrophes, the United States has been crippled and continues to wane and crumble under the iron fist of the Korean Army.
Taking a gander at the screenshots and the newly released trailer*(see below),*Crytek really captures the spirit of the series, continuing the distinct resistance-versus-totalitarians theme instilled by the original. The promise of being able to affect the in-game world is also quite appealing, bringing a new level of innovation to the series–and to the next-gen sphere altogether.
The sequel*will be crafted using Crytek’s new CRYENGINE–the same graphics engine that powers RYSE: Son of Rome– allowing for deeper immersion and realism thanks to the pristine graphics and raw dynamic power of the engine itself.*It’ll be interesting to see the game in action in the coming months, along with the intricate dynamics of co-operative singleplayer action.
Homefront: The Revolution is currently planned for a 2015 release window*on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. For more information be sure to visit the game’s official website.
