Is it a desktop-FX APU? A follow-up to the FX- 9590? Nobody knows.
Over the weekend, AMD’s Roy Taylor, the company’s most Twitter-active employee, posted a picture of what appears to be a box for a new water cooled entry in the FX-series of chips.
Taylor didn’t tweet more than “something new is coming” so it’s impossible to know what exactly is in the box he’s hyping. The chip could be designed to compete with Intel’s Core i7-4790K and Core i5-4690K — an overclocker-friendly follow-up to last year’s FX-9590, which would follow the AMD pattern of re-releasing the same FX chip every year with upwards clock adjustments. Alternatively, and this is scenario that is less likely, this could be an FX version of an APU.
There’s no word yet on a release date or pricing for this mystery part.
