MegaFon commits to selling iPhones after a four year hiatus

Russia’s second largest carrier will once again start selling the iPhones after ending its deal with Apple back in 2009.

MegaFon stopped carrying the iPhones back then because of a dispute with Apple over sales guarantees. The company requires carriers to commit to certain sales guarantees, or else the two don’t reach a deal. After failing to reach a favorable deal, MegaFon dropped the iPhone.*They have now reached a deal, the carrier has announced that it has inked a direct sales contract with Apple to sell the iPhones, though MegaFon hasn’t revealed exactly which models it will be stocking.

Some carriers in the region still stock the iPhone 4, alongside newer models such as the iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C. The deal that MegaFon has inked with Apple is quite similar to the one Vimpelcom struck back in October 2013 to start offering the two new iPhones to its customers.*Russia’s largest carrier, MTS, still does not have an official deal in place with Apple, it currently purchases iPhones from a local distributor.

With more than 68 million subscribers, MegaFon happens to have a much bigger subscriber base than Sprint and T-Mobile in the U.S., both of them sell the iPhone. This deal would no doubt help Apple to increase its share in the smartphone market in Russia, it currently holds just over nine percent.
