11.8 inch MacBook Air release expected later this year

Apparently Apple is going to release an 11.8 inch MacBook Air this year, which would be a redesign of the existing 11.6 inch model with smaller bezels.

There has been much speculation about the possibility of Apple refreshing the MacBook Air lineup and finally bringing the coveted Retina Display technology. This particular lineup was refreshed last year, but the company made little changes, the update was primarily focused on internal hardware.*Now there have been a lot of rumors previously about a 12 inch MacBook Air, but analyst Daniel Matte believes that an 11.8 inch model makes more sense.

Matte believes that Apple will go for the 11.88 inch diagonal display for its new MacBook Air because it will allow the company to incorporate a Retina Display, enabling it to offer 2,732×1,536 pixel resolution at 264ppi, the same pixels per inch as the iPad Air. Thus Apple would take advantage of the same display technology used in the existing iPad flagship, it would only need to cut panels to a larger size.

Currently Apple offers the MacBook Air in 11.3 inch and 13.3 inch sizes. The company is expected to release the new 11.8 inch MacBook Air by mid-2014, alongside updated models of the other models. Down the road, Matte believes that Apple will consolidate its entire notebook lineup to just three sizes, 11.8 inch, 13.3 inch and 15.4 inch MacBook, with at least two of them offering Retina Displays.
