Though the name of the unannounced Motorola phone is listed as “TBD”, we feel fairly confident the entry-level Moto E is due for a rehash of sorts.
Just because we’ve been overwhelmed with high-end Motorola smartphones of late, that doesn’t mean Lenovo’s daughter company has forgotten all about the low-end sector. Or that they’ve wrapped up their product announcements for the year.
A Geekbench filing for a “Motorola TBD” just came to our attention, and by the looks of it, Moto is on the verge of embracing 64-bit processing support. As you probably already know, Android 5.0 Lollipop is a 64-bit-enabled OS, unlike the 32-bit 4.4 KitKat.
Hence, it’d be a terrible shame if Moto, who has early access to L ports, snubbed Qualcomm’s 64-bit processing solutions any longer. The TBD handheld apparently packs a quad-core MSM8916 Snapdragon 410 clocked at 1.2 GHz.
Weirdly enough, Geekbench identified the pre-loaded operating system on the future Moto as 4.4 KitKat, so the benchmark scores aren’t exactly relevant for S410’s capabilities. Both the single and multi-core performance are up from the Moto G, but only by a whisker.
Clearly, whatever device Motorola was testing was still in early pre-production stages, so maybe the commercial launch won’t go down in 2014 after all. Or maybe they just didn’t get a chance to install Lollipop, and will do so in a matter of weeks.
Either way, since the original Moto G got not one, but two follow-ups already this year, our guess is the first Moto E refresher is also en route. One with 64-bit processing, but overall middling specs nevertheless and, we hope, a low, low price point.
Geekbench only reveals the cryptic Moto phone features 1 gig of RAM in addition to the quad-core S410 chip, leaving everything else up in the air. Based on recent history, we’re willing to bet the E2 will support 4G LTE connectivity. Maybe even up the screen size and resolution ante to the first-gen G’s level.
