Bing vies with Google to become Safari's default search provider

Microsoft and Yahoo is vying to be the ‘default’ search engine for upcoming iOS updates.* As insignificant as that may sound, the business potential in such a deal is insane and this single move by Apple may cause a large shift in search engine shares.

Google is by far the most popular search engine worldwide, but as the world transitions to a mobile lifestyle, we may soon see Yahoo and Bing gain some grounds.* A quick way to close the gap is to of course gain powerful allies, and who’s more powerful than Apple?

Apple, the creator of products such as the iPhone and iPad, has a huge say in which product succeeds and which will ultimately disappear.* For companies like Microsoft and Yahoo—more so Yahoo, search is the name of the game.* Google’s spot as the default search provider for Safari is set to expire in 2015, which means Yahoo and Microsoft are ready to take a stab at acquiring the lucrative spot being Apple user’s default search engine.

Microsoft is reportedly already pushing hard to become Safari’s default search provider.* From what we can see so far, the love hate relationship between Redmond and Cupertino is slowly blossoming into an affair.* Apple currently uses Bing as the search provider for its personal assistance, Siri, on iOS, and on OSX Yosemite’s Spotlight delivers Bing results.

Yahoo has a fighting chance, but only time can tell if Apple decides to take up another search mistress.* To Yahoo’s credit, the rebuilding company achieved some small victories in recent days, as it recently became Mozilla Firefox’s default search option.

To say Google will lose a large user base just because Apple may drop it as the default search engine is ludicrous.* The world Google is synonymous with online search, and when was the last time you heard your friends say “let’s Bing it.”

Still, Apple’s decision to have a new default search provider for Safari will be a big win for any company trying to take on Google.
