Motorola announces the Moto E, aims high with an ultra-low price

Motorola’s latest smartphone goes after feature phone owners with a super low price combined with better than average hardware.

Motorola has officially announced the Moto E, its latest budget smartphone that is aimed at first time smartphone buyers.

A ton of leaks and rumors painted a pretty picture for the Moto E and built up heavy anticipation, and Motorola has delivered. Officially announced in India for $120 (INR 6,999), the Moto E is going after devices like the Nokia Lumia 520/525, which offer an experience previously unseen at such price points. The phone is built around a 4.3-inch screen of qHD (540×960) resolution, making it the sharpest display when compared to competing phones from other big name manufacturers.

The display is protected by Gorilla Glass 3, and the phone is resistant to water splashes. In terms of hardware, the Moto E sports a 1.2GHz dual-core Snapdragon 200 processor, 1GB of RAM, a 5-megapixel camera (no front-facing camera, however), 4GB of internal storage and a microSD slot (up to 32GB), FM radio, dual SIM slots, and a 1,980 battery that is said to be*capable of lasting through a whole day of constant usage.

As expected, the phone runs Android 4.4 KitKat sans any customization. Motorola is promising an update to the next version of Android,*which is unheard of on phones with such a price tag and a selling point that also made the Moto G one of the best phones in its segment.*Like the Moto G, users will also be able to choose from various colors for the back cover, with*Black, Turquoise and Lemon being available at launch.

The Moto E will go on sale in India, UK, Brazil, Mexico, Spain and Canada later sometime later today, and it wouldn’t be surprising if it sells out within the first few minutes of launch.
