Apple’s popular tablet led all tablet sales in the U.S. this year.
There’s only a day or so left until 2013 officially comes to an end, which is why it is the perfect time and look back at the year one last time before planning for 2014.*Apple released a number of products this year, including two new iPads. Research from The NPD Group reveals that Apple’s tablets took the lion’s share of all tablet sales in the U.S. The iPad accounted for 15.8 percent of all personal computing devices sold in the U.S., whereas Android tablets from a number of manufacturers could only muster 8.7 percent, Windows powered tablets can be found in third place with just 2.2 percent.
It is interesting to note that despite leading its competitors, iPad’s share of unit sales in the country actually decreased, last year it stood at 17.1 percent. Whereas its competitors surged, with Android and Windows tablets gaining 4.5 percent and 1.4 percent year over year in 2013, respectively. The new iPads were released in October and November, so the extent to which they might have been able to plug the gap will fully be known when results from the ongoing quarter come in early next year.
Apple is expected to make a number of tablet related announcements in 2014. The company is rumored to be working on a 12.9 inch iPad which might be released in the second half of next year, whereas the iPad Air and iPad mini will be due to receive the latest hardware.
