Expect 4GB RAM smartphones soon; Samsung 4GB LPDDR4 mobile RAM enters mass production

Samsung today announced that it has started mass producing the industry’s first 8 gigabit (Gb) LPDDR4 (low power double data rate 4) mobile DRAM on its cutting-edge 20-nanometer (nm) process. With this announcement, Samsung has paved the way for 4GB mobile DRAM for a new level of performance in smartphones. The first wave of smartphones with 4GB of RAM are expected to arrive next year.

The 20nm 8Gb LPDDR4 DRAM that went into mass production today is even faster than DRAM for PCs and servers, but with much lower power draw that makes them suitable for use in mobile products such as tablets and smartphones with large high-resolution displays. The new 20nm 8GB LPDDR4 offers twice the density compared to a 4Gb LPDDR3 based on 20nm class* process, which makes it possible for a 4GB LPDDR4 DRAM package to be made. Samsung has been the leader as far as mobile DRAM is concerned and the latest 4GB LPDDR4 DRAM is another feather in the cap for Samsung’s semiconductor business. The 4GB LPDDR3 RAM solution has already won an Honoree CES Innovation Award in Embedded Technologies category.

The new LPDDR4 DRAM supports I/O data rate of up to 3,200 megabits per second, the new 4GB DRAM module can easily support Ultra HD video recording and playback, and continuous shooting of 20 or higher megapixel photos. Along with the high-performance, the new DRAM solutions also offer battery life savings as the latest 4GB DRAM module has an operating voltage of 1.1V, making it the most efficient memory solution for mobile devices.

Rumors about smartphones with 4GB RAM started appearing earlier this year, and now with the Samsung 4GB DRAM going into mass production, we can expect the first smartphones and tablets with 4GB RAM to arrive by next year. Samsung will be shipping its 4GB DRAM module to mobile manufactures by early next year. Since the Galaxy S5 has almost been confirmed to arrive with 3GB RAM, we can expect the Galaxy Note 5 to be the first Samsung smartphone with 4GB RAM.
