The Chinese threat looms larger than ever for Western mobile device makers, as the Meizu MX4 Pro sports Note 4-rivaling specs at half the price.
Forget Huawei, Oppo or Xiaomi, it’s Meizu that Apple and Samsung need to be wary of from the rising Chinese mobile scene. The standard MX4 may have left a little to be desired in terms of display resolution, processing power or multitasking when breaking cover, back in September.
But the Pro version is as high-tech as it gets. An all-around flagship, the 5.5 incher perhaps stands out the most with, believe it or not, a unique capacitive home button. The large, robust, sapphire-protected key conceals a fingerprint scanner that could make even Apple jealous.
The mTouch sensor has a stainless steel ring wrapped around it, and can purportedly process fingerprints with a half a second response speed and identify them at an angle of 360 degrees. We’ll have to try it out to see if the manufacturer’s claims jibe in reality. If they do, fingerprint recognition tech would become, perhaps for the first time ever, a verifiable perk instead of just a gimmick.
Other key selling points of the Meizu MX4 Pro include an octa-core Samsung-brewed 20nm Exynos processor and 3 GB RAM. The on-board chip is also found inside the Galaxy Alpha, but here, it’s overclocked at 2 and 1.5 GHz respectively. That’s four Cortex-A15 cores running at 2 GHz, and four A7s at 1.5, in a big.LITTLE arrangement.
The 5.5-inch Sharp-supplied panel is not only, well, super-sharp, at 2,560 x 1,536 pixels resolution (2K+), but also uber-tough, thanks to Gorilla Glass 3 coating, and nearly free of unnecessary bezels. The vertical borders are a measly 2.8 mm wide.
Speaking of dimensions, the MX4 Pro isn’t exactly what you’d call compact, but for a phablet very obviously made of premium materials, it’s decently light, at 158 grams. Not particularly thick either, at 9 mm, the 5.5 incher probably needed a subtle shaving of the horizontal bezels.
Still, the screen-to-body size ratio is an acceptable 76.5 percent, and at the end of the day, it’s amazing this thing only measures 9 mm thick, with a massive 3,350 mAh battery under the hood.
Photo buffs should be ecstatic to hear Meizu continues to rely on Sony for cutting-edge 20.7 MP Exmor RS imaging solutions. The 5 MP front snapper sounds decent enough for a few high-quality selfies here and there, and Android 4.4 KitKat runs the software show, in a Flyme OS-skinned form.
Any striking flaws to take into account? Just one – there’s no microSD card slot. But you can choose between 16, 32 and 64 GB internal storage configurations, and the cheapest is priced at an incredibly low $400 or so equivalent in China. December 6 is the ETA in Meizu’s homeland, with no words on a subsequent Western spread. Time to keep your promise, Meizu, and follow that American dream.
