Alibaba might play pivotal role in bringing Apple Pay to China

Apple and Alibaba are expected to partner up for this purpose.

It is only a matter of time till Apple Pay goes live in other markets around the world. Currently the new payments service has*been officially launched only in the U.S. Apple has already said that plans are on the cards to bring this service to different countries. China is perceived as a lucrative market by many and Apple’s focus on this market is evident, so it wouldn’t surprise anyone if Apple Pay went live in China as well.

But how would that happen?*Apple might have to team up with a local tech giant if it is to bring this service to the People’s Republic. CEO Tim Cook gave an interview at the WSJ Digital conference last month, where it was suggested that the back end services could be provided for Apple Pay by Alipay, a service by local tech giant Alibaba. This company holds 80 percent of online shopping marketshare in the country so obviously a partnership will work in Apple’s favor.

Alibaba already has agreements in place with over 200 financial institutions in China to provide service for Alipay, and this service is already used by hundreds of millions of people in the country. A partnership might not seem out of the question since Alibaba CEO Jack Ma also hinted that it would make sense. He said that during an interview with CNBC, adding that the thinks “both are interested,” but ultimately it remains to be seen if Apple and Alibaba strike a deal which would bring Apple Pay to China.
