Toshiba is going after Asus, Google, HP and each and every player involved in the affordable tablet arena, moving the spotlight away from struggling high-end efforts and instead focusing on surprisingly solid, cheap new entries titled Excite Go and Encore 2.
If you can’t beat them, join them. And then beat them at their own game. It’s a lesson Toshiba seems to have finally learned. Or at least a lesson they’re trying to apply. Following in the footsteps of so far lackluster, unexciting Excite models, here comes the $110 Excite Go.
Which fails to break low price records by a whisker. But then again, HP’s $100 7 Plus looks like a featherweight next to the far superior in every way Excite Go. The twice as large ROM (16 vs 8 GB) warrants a greater gap than just 10 bucks by itself, accommodating way more multimedia content.
Furthermore, Toshiba’s little guy runs Android 4.4 KitKat out the box, a version of the operating system the HP 7 Plus can only dream of. And the quad-core Intel Atom chip is likely considerably punchier than the no-name Allwinner SoC inside Excite Go’s rival.
Besides, it should help with autonomy, rated at “up to eight hours”. Granted, the 7-inch display is a blast-from-the-past pushover, boasting sub-par 1,024 x 600 pixels resolution, but that’s what the 7 Plus brings to the table too.
All in all, there’s really no comparing the two and, presuming Toshiba rolls the Excite Go out in a timely fashion (they’re promising a July discharge) in as many markets as possible, they’re definitely looking at their biggest hit in the niche.
Unless the Windows-based Encore 2 duo takes off with a bigger bang. Which it could, since the 8 incher starts at $200, and the 10 incher at $270. All while supporting full Windows 8.1 experience. With quad-core Intel Atom inside, up to 10 hours of autonomy, 5 MP cameras, microSD, microHDMI, 1,280 x 800 pix res panels and configurations going all the way up to 64 GB built-in storage.
