Rugged and water resistant smartphone - CAT B15 by Caterpillar

Caterpillar is a brand renowned for building tractors and lately shoes that dates back to 1904 when American inventor Benjamin Holt made his first type of tractor to cultivate the land. The business merged with its main competitor in 1925 to now become the company Caterpillar. Surprisingly their line of business shift to selling rugged phones is quite diverse.

As of 2012 Bullit Mobile Ltd has been awarded the official global licensee on rugged phones and accessories for the brand Caterpillar Inc. The CAT phones are sold in over 30 countries and interestingly their motto is to make products work well and durable in combination with the latest technology which is to build and ensure that it never breaks!

Caterpillar LTD are true to their word, and you can see in their CAT B15 Gravity video posted on Youtube how serious and committed they are in building phones that can withstand tough conditions.

The CAT B15 phone also comes with dual SIM slot availability. The outframe is robustly built and has yellow buttons that are soft enough that pressing firmly will execute functions on the Interface.

Water tight seal caps on both the phone jack, audio and power charge outlet makes it IP67 resistant to both dust and water at 1 meter depth within 30 minutes. In order to open the back casing you will have to switch the knob at the bottom to unlock the cover.

The CAT B15 battery has a capacity of 2000mAH and is removable from its body. The phone weighs in at 170 g which was lighter than I had expected and a height of 125mm x 69.5mm width x 14.95mm thickness.

Android Interface

The Android interface looks normal like any type of android based phone that you may have experienced using. According to the benchmark by Antut it gave it a score of 1 of XXXXXX not too bad!.

The CPU performance is not the best compared to other high end android smartphones but its evident the purposes of this smartphone is different with specific purposes on the hardware protectiveness rather than the operating performance.

Camera

Inheriting some of the camera functions in an Android Jelly bean version, it allows for customize photo taking using its cool 5 Mega pixels camera lens. I took a shot at my desk and the color composition looks great for a rugged phone.

Other specifications

The CAT B15 network frequency is in the range of 3G: 900/2100 MHz / GSM: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz so you will need to check your region carrier if this phone is capable to use. It also has a Bluetooth and wireless capability of Wi-Fi: IEEE 802.11 b/g/n.

The phones internal memory capacity is around 4 GB and RAM of 512 MB with an expandable extended memory of 32 GB using a microSD.

Cool Accessories

Even if the CAT phone is not to your liking, the accessories that are available for Iphone and iPad tablets are great. The Cat rugged material protects your tablets from drops of up to 1.2 meters in height utilising the shame shock absorbent properties used in SAIF™ motorbike personal protective equipment.

What's in the box!

The box contains a CAT B15 rugged smartphone, removable battery B10-2, black stereo headsets, USB cable, travel adapter and a manual book.
