Animated GIFs have never been easier to make.
While apps on smartphones can easily convert video to GIFs, there’s something to be said about a camera that directly shoots animated GIFs, using a novel crank and rewind mechanism.
Meet*‘OTTO’: an almost*adorable-looking, hackable*pocket five megapixel camera for making GIFs. You pull its main crank to activate GIF mode, rotate it clockwise for recording one or more clips, and finally rewind it to complete it.
OTTO does not come with its own LCD display, so these GIFs are sent to the OTTO app on your connected smartphone over WiFi.
*What makes OTTO so special is just how hack-able it is. You can create your own ‘modes’ that change the way your photos are taken, and processed afterwards. Additionally, you may tweak the hardware itself*by connecting, and replacing electronics.
With all this power, you can apply filters, add ‘deal with it’-like sunglasses to people’s faces, take timelapses, change the saturation of the animated GIF*based on how loud a scene is, capture photos at the sound of a clap, and a whole lot more. The possibilities are literally endless here.
Of course, since this is a Kickstarter project, it means you will have to wait (and hope) it reaches its target goal of $60,000 for commercial launch, expected in December 2014. Check out the original Kickstarter page for more details.
