Apple’s deal with Beats is still in limbo

The deal might hinge on whether Apple believes Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine are a “good fit” for Apple.

Apple’s $3.2 billion takeover of headphone company Beats Electronics was expected to be completed sometime last week, but no official announcement from either party in the deal has been made yet.

According to reports, the reason the deal has yet to be sealed is twofold: Apple executives are concerned that the duo behind Beats might not be the best fit for the company, and the acquisition of Beats’ streaming service — a venture only partially owned by Beats — might be more complex than expected.

Should the deal go through, Dre and Iovine would both become Apple executives with the announcement at WWDC according to a report by Billboard . Iovine would be in charge of Apple’s music business, but it isn’t yet quite clear what role Dre would play within the company. For his part, Dre celebrated the impending success of the closed deal by prematurely announcing it had been completed in an expletive laced video clip — a move that clashes with Apple’s hyper secretive and militantly message controlling culture of public relations.

Apple’s WWDC conference is only weeks away, so an announcement should be coming sooner rather than later.
