HTC’s latest flagship device features dual cameras, an extreme power saving mode, and*gesture controls.
After numerous leaks, teaser videos, hands-on reviews and benchmarks, the all new HTC One is here. It is called the HTC One (M8), and while the name is confusing, the device itself retains a lot of the design elements of last year’s HTC One. The HTC One (M8) features a similar unibody aluminium construction, but comes with more pronounced curves.
As rumored, HTC has made the switch to on-screen navigation buttons with the HTC One (M8). The device features a slightly larger 5-inch screen with a resolution of 1920 x 1080. Thanks to the on-screen navigation buttons and slimmer bezels, the size difference between last year’s HTC One and this year’s model is minimal.
Under the hood, the One (M8) features a quad-core Snapdragon 801 SoC. There will be two variants of the same: A 2.3 GHz version that will be sold in US, Europe, Middle East and Africa, while a faster 2.5 GHz version will be made available in Asia. All variants will feature 2 GB RAM, and will feature either 16 or 32 GB internal memory. HTC has also included a microSD card slot that can accommodate a 128 GB SD card.
The One (M8) has a 2,600 mAh battery, which delivers almost twice as much battery life as last year’s model. There is a new power saving mode that allows the device to last for 40 days on standby. In terms of connectivity, the One (M8) features LTE, Wi-Fi ac, NFC, Bluetooth 4.0 and a barometer.
Instead of one UltraPixel camera at the back, the One (M8) comes with two. The dual-camera is more of a depth sensor that allows users to dynamically change focus of an image after the fact. The presence of a second camera means that there is no hardware image stabilisation. The One (M8) relies entirely on digital image stabilisation.
The One (M8) runs Android 4.4 KitKat on HTC’s latest Sense 6 UI, which features a slightly tweaked design as well as a new version of BlinkFeed. There is a new feature called Motion Launch, which lets you activate features like BlinkFeed and the camera user interface through gestures. You can also answer calls by placing the device to your ear.
HTC has announced that the One (M8) will be available in Gunmetal Gray, Glacial Silver and Amber Gold starting today. There will also be a Google Play edition of the device which will make its debut shortly.
