One of the most buzzed-about new smartphones of 2014, Sony’s Xperia Z2, has just started its global rollout in Taiwan, being set to spread its wings around the world before long, but only in limited stocks.
Sony continues to troll its mobile rivals, setting Xperia Z2’s commercial debut mere hours prior to HTC One 2014’s formal announcement after unveiling the beautiful 5.2-inch handheld at the same event as Samsung’s Galaxy S5.
Coincidence? I think not, though it looks like Sony doesn’t have the resources to keep this timing war up for long. According to a company spokesperson, pre-orders made so far in the UK will be fulfilled in April, however “we do not expect to meet the high demand across all our sales channels”.
True, the rep’s words concerned merely Z2’s availability on British shores, yet we reckon Sony will be plagued by manufacturing woes on a global scale, based on a number of recent reports and strong hints from other officials.
Bottom line, certain markets may well see the smartphone bow in May, or even June, including the US, where Sony has never had warm relations with major carriers.
As for Taiwan, the first country to get possibly the world’s best handset at the moment, there are no words on inventory shortages yet, while pricing is, well, no surprise. The Xperia Z2 costs the equivalent of roughly $780 (TWD 23,900) around those parts, a set of noise cancelling headphones and a magnetic charging dock included.
That’s obviously no bargain, but it isn’t a rip-off either. After all, the Android KitKat-running gadget delivers top-shelf build quality and performance, with hardware highlights like Full HD screen resolution, quad-core Snapdragon 801 processor, 3 GB RAM, 20.7 MP rear-facing camera and 3,200 mAh battery.
On a somewhat unrelated note, Sony also launched the Xperia Z2 Tablet in Taiwan after doing the same in UK and a host of European markets. The 10-inch slate is available for between $550 and $700, being expected stateside next month at a starting price of $500.
