iOS 7.1 untethered jailbreak demoed on video



A well known developer has been able to achieve an iOS 7.1 untethered jailbreak, but there may be a catch.





Released a few weeks back, iOS 7.1 is the biggest update that Apple has ever rolled out for iOS 7.0 The update not only brought visual tweaks and new features, it also plugged the exploits used by the evasi0n jailbreak tool for iOS 7.x.

The evad3rs developer team was the first to release an untethered jailbreak for iOS 7.0. It took them a lot of time to get it right. Jailbreaking has now become harder than ever, since jailbreak developers primarily rely on software based exploits. These exploits are proving to be hard to find, and even if developers come across any, Apple is quick to plug them as soon as the exploits are made public. That’s exactly what happened with iOS 7.1, the exploits that allowed iOS 7.x untethered jailbreak have now been plugged.

However, users with legacy devices — particularly those that are A4-powered — might still be in luck. *The A4 processor happens to be the last processor with a bootrom level exploit. This means that developers don’t have to search for an exploit in the software. Apple can’t plug the hardware based exploit because to do that it would have to recall all of the A4 powered devices that it has sold, which we all know isn’t going to happen.

*@wincom is a well known jailbreak developer who focuses extensively on legacy devices and he has posted a video demo on YouTube of an iOS 7.1 untethered jailbreak.*Granted there are only a handful of devices that run the A4, and happen to be compatible with iOS 7.1, but still its something.



@wincom hasn’t said as yet when the iOS 7.1 untethered jailbreak will be released for legacy devices. The evad3rs team is working on finding a new software exploit, but so far it appears that they haven’t had any luck. If they succeed only then will newer devices like the iPad Air, Retina iPad mini, iPhone 5S/5C and more can be jailbroken untethered on iOS 7.1.
