Android fans may need to wait another month to get an iPhone 6 Plus contender from Samsung, but the Galaxy family member targeted at the standard iPhone 6 will be here September 26.
You’ve waited for years for a non-plastic Samsung handheld, and now, ladies and gentlemen, your patience is rewarded at last. Ladies and gents based in the USA, that is, because the semi-metallic Galaxy Alpha has been available in a handful of Asian territories since a couple of weeks back.
The half-aluminum/half-plastic slab is also en route to Europe, with an ETA circling the final days of September, so before long, Apple will be facing quite the stiff competition for its “normal”, 4.7-inch new iPhone.
Too bad stateside, Samsung seems to have struck some sort of exclusivity deal with AT&T. A temporary exclusivity, presumably, as T-Mobile was long rumored to get a piece of the Alpha action as well. It’d sure be nice if Verizon and Sprint also joined the party eventually, perhaps prompting AT&T to reconsider the current pricing structure.

Yes, on the outside, the Galaxy Alpha looks like a $200 with contracts-worth flagship. But inner beauty counts too, and while the 4.7 incher is no pushover, it certainly doesn’t warrant a $613 outright price tag.
Make it $500, $550 tops and $100 with 24-month pacts, and you have yourselves a deal, Ma Bell. After all, Alpha’s rear is still made of chintzy polycarbonate, and the 720p display is no stunner. Nor is the 12 MP camera a photographic powerhouse. And the 1,860 mAh battery is downright tiny.
Intriguingly, Samsung replaced the octa-core Exynos chip inside the “international” version with an unnamed quad-core 2.5 GHz unit for America. Could it be a Snapdragon 805? Nah, it’s most likely an 801. A zippy, but not state-of-the-art 801.
