Radeon R9 280 and R9 280X cards will no longer be rebrands with AMD’s new GPU.
AMD’s best-selling *Radeon R9 280 and R9 280X cards will be getting a new GPU called Tonga sometime soon, according to a report by VR-Zone’s sister site*VR-Zone*Chinese.
Tonga is set to replace the Tahti Pro GPU found in the current generation of Radeon R9 280 cards, which are rebrands of AMD’s older Radeon HD 7950 and HD 7970 cards.Tonga will be based on the 20 nanometer process node and is said to include 2 GB of GDDR5 memory, but add-in-board partners could certainly increase that number to much more.
Currently pricing for the R9 280 starts at $299, but it’s not known if that will change come August or if Nvidia starts a price war with its mid-range GeForce cards.
