Moto X successor launching in the summer, work on smartwatch underway

Motorola is working on a smartwatch, a successor to the Moto X, and is working on bringing the Moto Maker customization utility to more markets.

Motorola held a Q&A event at the Mobile World Congress, where it announced that it is working on a smartwatch that will be available sometime later this year. It didn’t give out much in the way of the details of the watch, but has mentioned that style and battery life are two issues it is looking to fix before launching the device. It is certainly a better strategy than the one Samsung took with the original Galaxy Gear, with the manufacturer deciding to address these issues in the next iteration of the device.

Motorola also stated that the Moto X successor will likely launch in the summer. The manufacturer also reiterated its commitment to Android, and mentioned that it continue to launch handsets only on the Android ecosystem. Also, Motorola announced that the first-gen Moto X is set to launch in India and Australia in the coming weeks.

Moto Maker will be rolled out to the UK and Germany soon, with other countries in the region set to receive the customization utility in due course of time. Users in Mexico will get access to this utility sometime in the second quarter of this year. When asked about availability of the Moto X and Moto G in China, Motorola stated that there weren’t any plans to do so immediately, but that both handsets might be available at a later stage.

Both the Moto X and Moto G were very well received globally, with the Moto G becoming the most successful handset from Motorola in just under three months of availability. With a new smartwatch in the works and the successor to the Moto X set to launch in the summer, Motorola is gearing up for a strong 2014.
