When Singapore first moved from analog to DVB-T I was one of the many who remarked how much improved and sharper Free to Air channels (FTA) were but a little disappointed that of the many channels, only a few were available digitally. Fast forward today, with the very new implementation of DVB-T2 broadcast standard, all FTA channels are now in crystal clear digital mode! Initially many jumped to set top boxes which hooked up to a LCD/LED TV but still many more clamoured for a solution that worked for a desktop PC or laptop. Today we are reviewing the offering from Hauppauge the PCTV 292E.
The specifications for the PCTV 292e could be found in their website
PCTV Systems: 292e Quad Digital TV Receiver Product Description along with downloads and FAQs.
Now the question most are asking: how well is this small package performing with regards to receiving and recording our local DVB-T2 channels? This review was tested with the device located in the estate of Pasir Ris.
As per the proposed time table for indoor coverage for DVB-T2 as shown below
the estate of Pasir Ris was planned to be settled between 2015/16 but initial testing with supplied antenna proved very promising and the images received for the DVB-T2 FTA channels were clear and sharp.
Feedback with Windows Media Center (WMCE)
From the Installation media provided, the option was selected as shown below
Software installation was smooth and quick. PCTV 292E was connected, detected and installed.
In general PCTV 292E works very well with WMCE with the supplied drivers. EPG displayed correctly and test recording showed no video/audio issues.
