Nexus 6 to be based off the LG G3, feature a fingerprint sensor

Nexus 6 is said to launch sometime in the second half of*this year, and might be the last such device from Google.

The latest batch of rumors indicate that Google will continue to collaborate with LG when it comes to the Nexus line of mobile devices. Like the Nexus 4 and nexus 5, the Nexus 6 is said to be based off an LG flagship, with this year’s model said to be based on the hardware and design of the as yet unannounced LG G3.

Google’s Sundar Pichai already confirmed that a new Nexus mobile device will launch sometime in the second half of this year, which would indicate that Google is sticking to the same launch cycle as the Nexus 4 and the Nexus 5. Both devices launched sometime at the end of October, so it is likely that we will see the Nexus 6 announcement at the same time this year.

According to Android Geeks, the Nexus 6 will feature a fingerprint authentication system. The device will also likely come with the same hardware as the G3, which would mean a 5.2-inch QHD screen, Snapdragon 805 with a quad-core 2.7 GHz CPU, 3 GB RAM and 16/32 GB internal memory. The slight decrease in screen size from 5.5 inches on the G3 to the 5.2 inches is said to better accommodate the fingerprint sensor in a chassis that is similar to that of the G3. The Nexus 6 is also said to come with the next major version of Android.

This might be the last Nexus mobile device on offer, as Google looks to move away from the Nexus line in lieu of the Android Silver program.

StarHub fiber broadband. Sip protocol blocked?

Anybody using sip protocol on StarHub fiber broadband experiencing same problem as me? I have got SMS from them saying that they had a recent maintenance last week and now can't use my sip phone.... True enough my network changed.. From. 182.xxx.xxx.xxx to 27.xxx.xxx.xxx. Sip protocol seems to be blocked... Logged a call with them.. Awaiting their reply back...

New Google Glass teardown reveals $80 build cost

Google Glass might not even cost $100 in bill of materials, according to a new teardown analysis.

A Google Glass teardown from last year revealed that the bill of materials for the device was at $208. Even accounting for the cost involved in customizing the hardware to fit into the unique design of the Glass, the device would not have cost Google more than $250 to manufacture.

At the time, it was believed that the $1500 price for the Glass was to limit the device only to limit access of the device to technology enthusiasts. Google has mentioned last year that a consumer version of Glass would launch later this year, although the price of this device wasn’t mentioned. Considering it comes with similar hardware as the current iteration, it should be around the $300 – $350 mark.

However, a new teardown published by Teardown.com mentions the $200 BOM quoted from last year were too high, and that the hardware used in the Glass amounts to a mere $80. The CPU, a TI OMAP 4430, was the costliest item on the list at $13.96. All the wireless sensors as well as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth radios combined accounted for $10.79, while the 5 MP camera was valued in at $5.66. The touchscreen display was said to be one of the costliest components in the Glass, but Teardown’s analysis revealed that it only costs $3.

The website does say that these figures were rough estimates, and that the numbers might change after a thorough review. When contacted, a Google spokesman called Teardown.com’s cost estimate “absolutely wrong.” While Teardown’s estimates might be on the lower side of things, the underwhelming hardware on the Google Glass does bring into question the high cost of the device. With a product like Glass, it is not always down to the cost of the hardware that is included in the device, as other factors, like design, build quality and software features should also be taken into account.

Motorola teases new smartphone launch on May 13, could unveil the Moto E

The press invite sent out by Motorola suggests that the company will be unveiling the successor to the value-for-money Moto G.

Motorola has sent out a press invite for a smartphone launch event on May 13 in London, and the teaser text hints at the arrival of the Moto E.

As previous leaks have revealed, the Moto E will offer relatively premium specs at a budget price, similar to the Moto G. These specs are expected to include a 4.3-inch display, a dual-core 1.2GHz processor, 4GB of internal memory, 1GB of RAM, a 5-megapixel camera, Android 4.4 KitKat, and a 1,900 mAh battery. The Moto E is also said to have a microSD slot, the absence of which was one of the very few shortcomings of the Moto G.

Motorola hasn’t provided any details, but the “Priced for all” text in the invite is a surefire indication that the company’s next smartphone will be aimed at the masses. It’s unclear what the exact pricing strategy will be, but if the Moto G’s rock-bottom price is anything to go by, Motorola will be offering yet another device that puts all other low-end smartphones to shame.
